Ingredients

For the Cake
  • 1 pack Chocolate cake Use a store-bought or homemade chocolate cake for rich flavor and structure.
For the Whipped Cream
  • 2 cups Heavy cream Whip this until stiff peaks form for a light and airy texture.
For the Fruit Layer
  • 2 cups Cherries Fresh cherries provide the best taste; canned or jarred alternatives can work in a pinch.
  • 1 cup Kirsch (cherry brandy) Adding this enhances the flavor, but feel free to omit for a non-alcoholic recipe.
For the Garnish
  • 1 cup Chocolate shavings Dark chocolate shavings add the perfect finishing touch and extra texture.

Equipment

  • Mixer
  • Trifle dish
  • mixing bowl

Method

Preparation
  1. Bake your chocolate cake according to the recipe or package instructions, typically at 350°F (175°C) for about 30-35 minutes. Once baked, allow it to cool completely on a wire rack. Then, cut the cooled cake into one-inch cubes.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, pour in the heavy cream and begin whipping it with a mixer on medium speed. After about 1-2 minutes, increase the speed and continue whipping until stiff peaks form, which usually takes another 2-4 minutes.
  3. Grab a clear trifle dish to showcase the layers beautifully. Start by placing a layer of chocolate cake cubes at the bottom of the dish. Spoon a layer of whipped cream over the cake, followed by a handful of cherries. Repeat the layers, alternating between cake, cream, and cherries, until you reach the top of the dish.
  4. To add a decorative touch, sprinkle dark chocolate shavings on top of the final layer of whipped cream. You can also add any leftover cherries for a pop of color and flavor.
  5. Once assembled, cover the trifle with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully. For the best results, chilling overnight is recommended.
  6. When ready to serve, simply uncover your Black Forest Trifle for Christmas and scoop generous portions into dessert bowls.

Notes

Assemble your trifle a day in advance for best flavor. The chilling time allows the ingredients to meld and the cake to absorb some of the creaminess.
