Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 1 cup Water Provides moisture to create the dough; no substitutions necessary.
  • 1 stick Unsalted Butter Adds richness and flavor; use salted butter if unsalted is unavailable, but reduce added salt slightly.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt Enhances flavor; can use kosher salt or sea salt.
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated Sugar Sweetens the dough and helps create a crispy exterior when mixed with cinnamon.
  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour Forms the structure of the churro; substitute with a gluten-free flour blend if needed.
  • 2 large Eggs (beaten) Bind the dough and provide leavening for a light texture; ensure eggs are at room temperature for best results.
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon Adds warm, sweet flavor; use fresh cinnamon for the best taste.
For the Dipping Sauce
  • 1 jar Nutella Rich chocolate-hazelnut dip that perfectly complements churros; any chocolate-hazelnut spread can substitute but Nutella is the classic choice.
For the Coating
  • 1 cup Additional Granulated Sugar Necessary for rolling the churros post-frying; it’s best to mix this with cinnamon for a flavorful coating.
  • 1 teaspoon Extra Ground Cinnamon Mix with sugar for coating to enhance the churro bites' sweetness and warmth.

Equipment

  • medium saucepan
  • piping bag
  • large star tip
  • candy thermometer
  • deep fryer or large heavy pot

Method

Preparation
  1. Start by melting the Nutella in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat it for about 20-30 seconds, stirring halfway through to ensure it becomes smooth and pourable.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, 1 stick of unsalted butter, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar. Bring to a gentle boil while stirring occasionally.
  3. Once boiling, remove the saucepan from heat and immediately add 1 cup of all-purpose flour to the mixture. Stir vigorously until a smooth ball of dough forms, about 1-2 minutes.
  4. Allow the dough to cool for about 5 minutes before incorporating the beaten eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  5. While the dough is resting, prepare your coating by mixing together 1 cup of granulated sugar with 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon in a shallow dish.
  6. In a deep fryer or a large pot, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C) using a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature.
  7. Fit a piping bag with a large star tip and fill it with churro dough. Carefully pipe 4-6 inch strips of dough into the hot oil.
  8. Fry the churro bites for about 2-3 minutes on each side until they turn golden-brown, using a slotted spoon to turn them.
  9. Once golden, remove churros from the oil and let drain on paper towels. Roll each churro in the cinnamon-sugar mixture while still warm.
  10. Enjoy your Nutty Churro Bites warm, served alongside the melted Nutella for dipping.
