Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 2.5 cups All-Purpose Flour You can use whole wheat flour for a denser bread.
  • 1 cup Warm Water Ensure it's 100-110°F (37-43°C) for optimal results.
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil Vegetable oil or melted butter can be used.
  • 2 teaspoons White Granulated Sugar Feel free to use honey as a natural sweetener.
  • 1 teaspoon Pink Salt Regular sea salt works perfectly as well.
  • 2 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast Instant yeast can be added directly to dry ingredients.
  • 1 large Egg For egg wash; milk can be brushed on top if dairy-free.

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Parchment paper
  • oven
  • Wire rack

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, mix 1 teaspoon of sugar with 1 cup of warm water and sprinkle 2 teaspoons of active dry yeast on top. Let sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2.5 cups of all-purpose flour, the remaining sugar, and 1 teaspoon of pink salt. Stir until well incorporated.
  3. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour the yeast mixture and 2 tablespoons of olive oil into the flour. Mix until a dough begins to form.
  4. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough to release air, shape into a loaf, and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Let rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F. Whisk an egg and brush over the top of the loaf.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  9. Let cool on a wire rack for at least 15-20 minutes before slicing.
