Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and cocoa powder. Whisk to blend well before adding melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract. Stir until smooth, then fold in walnuts if using.
- Pour the batter into a greased 1.5-quart casserole dish, spreading it evenly. This will act as the base for the fudgy pudding layer.
- Mix the topping ingredients in a separate bowl: sugar, brown sugar, cocoa powder, and a pinch of salt. Sprinkle evenly over the batter without stirring.
- Carefully pour boiling water over the surface of the batter and topping layers. Do not mix; the water will create a pudding layer underneath the cake.
- Bake for approximately 30 minutes. The top should be set; the center may look slightly underbaked.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving warm, ideally with vanilla ice cream.

Notes
To maintain a fudgy pudding layer, avoid overbaking. Test at 25 minutes for optimal gooeyness.
